Expanding your horizons - Thomas Cook style

Administration

"As I come from a seaside town back in the UK, the tourism industry is something that I’ve always been aware of. So for me it seemed like a natural area in which to develop a career. But, as I wanted to broaden my knowledge and experience other parts of the world, I decided to develop this career overseas.

I actually tried many roles before going into Admin, including time as an Overseas and Transfer Rep. With its mix of office work and customer service, I really think I’m getting the best of both worlds. I also like knowing what I’ll be doing on a daily and weekly basis, which you do get with this job. And, with set hours too, there are no late nights. Well, not at work anyway.

To do the job well, you need to be very organised and able to prioritise what needs doing when. Multitasking is also a very valuable skill, as you’ll often get distracted from the job in hand. Obviously you need general office skills too, but everything can be learnt, whether it’s resort information or how to use a certain computer programme. After a while it becomes second nature.

Even though my role is structured, there’s still a lot variety. From transfer allocations and checklists for the reps to preparing for welcome meetings, there’s always lots to keep me busy. Then there are the things which you can’t plan for, like phone calls from reps or customers looking for help. I’ve even been asked to help out at the airport. It all makes for a really interesting time. And we all work as one big resort team, which is a great feeling."
